Cognitive Restructuring Examples for Negative Thoughts | Habit of Living

Cognitive restructuring is easier to understand with examples. The goal is not to deny hard things, but to move from automatic thought to a more accurate thought.

CBT Examples

Examples of cognitive restructuring for anxiety, self-criticism, overthinking, and negative thought reframing.

Example: catastrophizing

Automatic thought: "If this meeting goes badly, my career is over." Balanced thought: "The meeting matters, but one meeting will not define my whole career. I can prepare and handle feedback if it comes."

Example: mind reading

Automatic thought: "They did not reply, so they are upset with me." Balanced thought: "There are many reasons someone might not reply. I can check in instead of treating silence as proof."

Example: self-criticism

Automatic thought: "I am failing because I missed a habit." Balanced thought: "Missing one day is information, not failure. I can restart with a smaller step."
